Township (Republic of China)

The townships are the administrative subdivisions of Republic of China (Taiwan) counties, along with County-controlled city. Most of the present townships originates from Towns (街) and Villages (庄) in the Japanese era. After the World War II, the ROC government reformed them as urban townships (鎮 zhèn) and rural townships (鄉 xiāng). Local laws do not enforce strict standards for classifying them, generally urban township has a larger population and more business and industry than rural township, but not to the extent of County-controlled city.

Recently there are totally 194 townships in the Republic of China, including 153 rural townships and 41 urban townships. 184 townships are under the 12 counties of Taiwan Province, 10 townships are under the two counties of Fujian Province. Penghu County and Lienchiang County are the only two counties that do not have urban townships.

Names below are transliterated using the Hanyu Pinyin romanization system. Note that the county names do not necessarily use Hanyu Pinyin.
